There’s a song on my iPod that is so beautiful I can barely listen to it. I fight back tears when I even think about it. The funny thing is that its full of what I’m sure are beautiful lyrics but I cannot understand one word. You see, its an unusual situation. The singer of this song is an Australian aborigine, he’s blind, doesn’t speak English, and the song is sung in an aboriginal dialect. His skin is black as coal, his fingers long, weathered and patient. His presence is mesmerising, to look at him is as if seeing a living relic of a time before the human condition, a time more familiar with feeling and empathy than self importance and pretence. Its not often someone’s favourite tune is in a foreign language, even if that language is from your own country. This fact is immaterial however. When I listen to this tune, it like tuning into heaven for a few minutes. It’s a collection of sounds so soulful, so free of the human condition, you feel it resonate in a part of you that you can barely admit exists. It’s a tune that I’d like to have played at my farewell, my last hurrah, my funeral, whatever you want to call it. If the is world waiting for me on the other side of this life is filled with music like this, it will be heaven indeed.

Human Nature and the Story of Life

Does human nature fit in with the story of life on this planet? Or is human nature a big mistake do you think? Life is just so incredible. I mean have you seen all the David Attenborough documentaries title Life on TV? They are just incredible. Even the one where they had to get footage from a zoo of polar bears and then incorporate it into the actual documentary to make it looks as if it were shot in the wild.

But anyway, back to the main point, life is incredible but there is a great outstanding question as to whether human nature is part of it or not. It’s quite confronting to think about, so I probably won’t answer it in this short piece! But it’s worth thinking about it, don’t you think? In fact, I would say it is one of the great unanswered questions. I reckon whoever answers it properly is going to be very rich one day. Or maybe it will be such a redeeming answer that money and all that just won’t be sought after anymore!
